There is a real love/hate relationship with computers and robots and there is an ongoing debate as to whether or not they are here to save us or enslave us. At least one third of the information learnt in the first year of an IT degree will be obsolete by the time you enter the workforce. As a certified geek, I’ve found it difficult to understand relationships and marriage. I’ve done what any other geek would do – use data analytics to understand my wife, how and when I should communicate with her more effectively, and understand why she is reading certain books whereas I’ll happily bury my nose in the latest technical whitepaper for fun. Every time we go online, we leave a virtual trail about who we are, what we are doing and potentially where we are going. In this presentation, I will ask for a volunteer to allow me to perform an identity hack on them and show how easy it is for anyone to uncover potentially sensitive information about them and how this can be used against them. It can be a confronting demonstration and my goal is not to scare the audience but to enlighten them about how they can follow some simple steps to be safer online.
